Seeing a cockroach in the home is enough to strike fear in anyone’s heart. Besides giving people inside the home the feeling of creepy crawlies, cockroaches pose a real danger. Cockroach infestations can develop very quickly and they can also go undetected for long periods of time. These pests are mainly nocturnal and so, they will usually only come out at night when everyone in the home is asleep. It is important to know the signs of cockroaches, and what to do if you find them in your home.

Are Cockroaches Dangerous?

Cockroaches are filthy creatures. They breed in sewage and feed on garbage, and carry many pathogens that can cause sickness in people. According to a Cambridge University study, there are 30 different species of bacteria associated with cockroaches that live in close proximity to humans. The World Health Organization also states that cockroaches carry microorganisms that can cause dysentery, diarrhea, leprosy, cholera, and the plague. The biggest threat cockroaches pose to humans is the fact that people can become allergic to them after they have been frequently exposed to them.

What Types of Cockroaches are in Idaho?

The three main types of cockroaches in Idaho are the American cockroach, the German cockroach, and the brown-banded cockroach. The American cockroach is distinguishable by yellow coloring right behind the head. It is also glossy and reddish-brown in color. The American cockroach is the largest of all types of these pests in Idaho, measuring up to three inches in length. The American cockroach actually originated in Africa, so these pests still look for warm areas inside Nampa homes.

German cockroaches are not as large as their American counterparts, but they are an even more invasive pest. Inside a home, the German cockroach does not have any natural predator and so, their populations can multiply very quickly. The smallest cockroach in Nampa is the brown-banded cockroach, which is only about half an inch in length. These pests have light tan areas on their brown backs.

Signs of a Cockroach Infestation

Due to the fact that cockroach infestations are so difficult to detect, it is critical that homeowners know what signs to look for so they can eliminate the problem before it becomes worse. The most common signs to watch for are as follows:

  • Droppings: Cockroaches will always leave droppings in their wake. These are black and very small, measuring less than one millimeter in length.
  • Smear marks: If the area cockroaches are in is damp, the pests will leave smear marks at wall-floor junctions and on horizontal surfaces.
  • Egg capsules: Egg capsules contain multiple cockroach eggs. Their look is distinctive depending on the type of cockroach that laid it.
  • Shedding: As cockroaches mature into adulthood, they will shed their skin five to eight times.
  • Property damage: Cockroaches will almost always destroy food packaging, which is one of the first signs people often notice. Cockroaches can also cause unusual damage to organic items, such as books and leather.
  • Unpleasant odors: When a cockroach population grows very large, it will produce a lingering and unpleasant musty odor that will taint any item the pests come in contact with.

How to Prevent Cockroaches

The best way to deal with cockroaches is to never have to deal with them at all. There are some very simple preventative measures that can help keep cockroaches out of the home. These include:

  • Seal entrances: As the temperatures climb, particularly in the summer months, cockroaches will try to enter homes where it is cooler than outside. To do this they will use cracks and crevices in windows, doors, and foundations. Seal these entrances to keep the pests out.
  • Clean up all food: Cockroaches enter homes in search of shelter and food. Always clean up any food that is left on counters, floors, and behind appliances. Also confine all eating to the kitchen and dining room so crumbs and spills are contained to one or two areas only.
  • Store food properly: The thin plastic and cardboard that many food items are stored in are very easy for cockroaches to chew through. Store food in large, study containers that are glass or plastic so cockroaches cannot get into the food supply.
  • Make sure damp areas are dry: Cockroaches like damp spaces and they are attracted to things like leaky pipes and faucets. Dry these areas regularly so there is nothing that will attract the pests.
